The Evolution of Dance
We have started our study of dance by watching The Evolution of Dance on youtube. Even though many of the students said that they dreaded the dance unit and didn't want to dance, most couldn't stay in their seats while we watched the attached video. Students will be preparing a research paper and a brief live or recorded dance about an era or type of dance. The project will be due in the beginning of March.

Visual Arts: Andy Warhol, Pop art and the Colour Wheel
Students will make connections to what was popular for Andy Warhol in the 1960s and what is popular today. They will then use their knowledge of the colour wheel to colour four reproductions of the image they chose.

Music: Rhythm and Melody in Rap
|
We have been listening to many different types of songs in class that showcase pitch, melody and rhythm. Now it's time for the students to put their knowledge into practice. Using Garage Band on the iPads, the students will follow Jordan's lead, lay down a strong beat with a melody on top and rap about how tough their lives are. Please see below for the assignment details and assessment criteria.

Visual Arts: Pablo Picasso
For our third artist study we talked about Pablo Picasso and how he helped to found Cubism in the early 1900s as a response the rapidly growing technologies at the time (ex. photography, automobiles, telephone). He and his friends decided that they could make people look at their art in different ways and that they weren't bound by using only one perspective in their work. The students will demonstrate their understanding of Picasso's work by creating cutout Frankenstein faces in Picasso's style.

Visual Arts: Henri Matisse
Our second visual art project is inspired by French painter and sculptor Henri Matisse. Matisse painted increasingly abstract work until illness and old age made the wheelchair-bound artist unable to paint. He turned to cutting as his creative outlet and developed a style that has been called "drawing with scissors." The students will pick a theme and cut out shapes that represent that theme and then glue them abstractly on a piece of paper.
** This project will be due on Friday, October 14 with two class period given on Friday, September 23 and Friday, October 7.

Visual Arts: The Scream
Our first visual art project is a study of the theme and the techniques that Edvard Munch used in his famous painting The Scream. While I don't expect the students to duplicate the painting skill that Munch showed in his work, I want them to explore the idea of the strong feelings that would make the central figure feel such strong feelings. Students typically enjoy this assignment and the ability to use their creativity and usually a sense of humour to draw a Scream-like figure screaming for another reason. Please see the document below for the assessment criteria.
