Basketball
Grade 6 basketball tryouts will be starting at the end of March for the board tournament at the beginning of May. We were luck to have a basketball expert in the class, our student teacher Ms. Denomme. She started the unit by showing the students how to control the ball and the most important rules and strategies.
Handball
In the lead-up to the board handball tournaments on February 25 and 26, we will be working on handball skills like passing, positioning, shooting, scoring and defending. Learning about handball will prepare students for other sports that work with a similar set up (5 players who are trying to score and defend).
Volleyball
We will be learning and improving volleyball skills in gym class and students will be practising volleying, bumping and serving with proper techniques. Please see the diagram to the left that explains how volleying needs to be done with the whole body, including strong legs in order to be effective and to avoid injuries to the fingers.

Cooperative Games
Our first unit is Cooperative Games, which will focus on having the students work together to complete activities actively, safely and in a manner that is fun for all. For the culminating activity in this unit, students will make up their own cooperative game to present to the class that we will all play. Self assessment of the following skills will also be an important component of this unit as students become more aware of how they work with others. Please see the success criteria below:
