The Leader in Me
Holy Cross is a Leader in Me school, which means that we follow Steven Covey's 7 Habits for Highly Effective People to build personal and leadership skills within our school community. This image gives you an overview of the habits. We will be focusing on each habit in depth through class discussion and activities. Students have been given Leader in Me workbooks to help them to develop their own goals and identify strengths and areas for growth.
Habit 6: Synergize
In this habit, we examine how to collaborate creatively so that people can come up with better solutions together than they could have on their own. It brings together the previous habits that we have been studying because you can't synergize effectively if you're not listening effectively or thinking about win-win, for example.

Habit 5: Seek First to Understand then to be understoodIn March we are working on the 5th habit, which also ties in nicely with our English oral language expectations around active listening. We will talk about how it looks and feels when we are not listened to and how we can strive to become empathetic listeners.

Habit 4: Think Win Win
In our competitive world, students will be challenged to think of ways in which we can all seek to reach mutually beneficial outcomes in our interactions with others.

Habit 3: Put first things First
In order to be able to focus on our priorities, students are working on vision boards so that they can better picture what is most important to them. If they can really imagine what they want to do in the near and distant future, they will be better able to make choices that lead them in the right direction. It takes discipline to work first then play or relax but it helps to understand what is important to us.

Habit 2: Begin with the end in mind
Habit 1: Be Proactive
In the first habit, we focus on taking responsibility for ourselves and our actions. If we think before we act and remember to do the right thing, it lays a strong foundation upon which we can build the other skills. The Power Point presentation below provided the structure for our class discussion about what it mean to be proactive.
