Classroom Economy
Why am I charging students rent for their desks?
After much deliberation, I decided to start the Classroom Economy program in our class. Mrs. Rinaldi's grade 6 class started it in September and I was hesitant to try something so new. Now that I see how successful it is in her class and how well the program gives leadership opportunities and realistic financial literacy lessons to the students, I decided to begin this adventure.
Students got their jobs during the week of October 17, once everyone had the opportunity to apply for the jobs they want and submitted letters of reference for the police or banker jobs.
We have pay days every two weeks and the students will pay rent of $500 at the beginning of the month. We will have auctions or stores where students can bring in items to sell or auction off to the highest bidders every 6 weeks to 2 months as a further lesson about money management.
